QR Code Print Sizes: How Big Does a QR Code Need to Be?
The minimum reliable size for a printed QR code is 2 cm × 2 cm (about 0.8 inches square), assuming a short URL or simple content. For most practical applications — business cards, table cards, signage — you should aim for 3–4 cm minimum. This guide explains why, and how to choose the right size for your specific use case.
What determines minimum size?
A QR code is made up of a grid of small square modules — black and white cells that encode the data. The more data the code contains, the more modules it needs, and the denser the grid becomes. When you print a dense grid at a small size, individual modules become so tiny that a phone camera cannot reliably distinguish them.
Two factors control how dense a QR code is: the amount of data encoded and the error correction level. More data means more modules. Higher error correction means more redundant modules (which increases density but improves reliability in damaged or partially obscured conditions).

These are guidelines for standard content (short URLs or simple text). If your QR code contains a lot of data — a full vCard with multiple fields, a long URL, a long SMS message body — increase the recommended size by 20–30%.
Scan distance and the 10:1 rule
A useful rule of thumb for signage is the 10:1 ratio: the maximum comfortable scanning distance is roughly ten times the width of the QR code. A 3 cm code scans well from about 30 cm. A 10 cm code scans from about one metre.
For a code on a table card that someone holds 20–30 cm away, a 2.5–3 cm code works fine. For a code on a poster or window display that someone scans from a standing distance of 40–60 cm, aim for 5–8 cm.
