Static vs Dynamic QR Codes: Which One Do You Actually Need?
If you have spent any time looking at QR code tools, you will have seen a lot of marketing around "dynamic" QR codes. The pitch is usually that you can edit the destination after printing, track how many people scanned it and get analytics on scan locations and devices. This sounds useful. But for the majority of real use cases, it is more than you need — and it comes with a meaningful hidden cost. Here is a clear look at what each type does and how to decide which one makes sense for you.
What is a static QR code?
A static QR code encodes the destination — a URL, WiFi credentials, contact details, a text string — directly in the QR code image itself. When someone scans it, their phone reads the data straight from the image and acts on it. There is no redirect, no server involved and nothing that can break.
Because the data is baked into the image, a static QR code works forever. It does not depend on any third-party service staying online, and it cannot expire or stop working because someone did not pay a monthly bill. You can download the image, put it on a flyer, leave it in a drawer for three years and it will still scan correctly.
The trade-off is that you cannot change where the code points after you have created it. If you print 500 flyers with a static QR code pointing to a specific URL and that URL later changes, you need to reprint the flyers with a new code.
What is a dynamic QR code?
A dynamic QR code does not encode the actual destination in the image. Instead, it encodes a short redirect URL hosted by the QR code platform you used to create it (something like qrco.de/abc123). When someone scans it, their phone first visits that redirect URL, which then sends them to wherever you have configured the destination to be.
This means you can log into the platform later and change the destination without changing the code image. You can also see how many times the code was scanned, from which countries and on which device types, because all scans pass through the platform's servers.
The catch is significant: the code only works as long as the platform keeps running and you keep paying. Dynamic QR codes from most providers are tied to a subscription. Cancel the subscription, let the account lapse or if the provider shuts down — the code stops working. Anyone who scans it gets an error or a "plan expired" message.

When does dynamic actually make sense?
Dynamic QR codes are genuinely useful in a few specific situations. Large-scale print campaigns where reprinting is expensive are the main case. If you are printing 50,000 product packages and you need the option to update the landing page URL without recalling the stock, dynamic makes sense. The cost of the subscription is small compared to a reprint run.
The other legitimate case is detailed scan analytics. If you are running a marketing campaign and need to know which billboard location generates the most scans, or you want to A/B test two landing pages using the same printed code, dynamic gives you that data. Most free or cheap tools will not give you the geographic or device-level breakdown that a proper analytics platform provides.
For anything else — a restaurant menu code, a WiFi card for your office, a business card, a personal project — static is almost always the better choice. Simpler, cheaper, permanent.
The "I might want to change the URL later" trap
The most common reason people reach for dynamic codes is a reasonable one: "What if I need to change the URL after I've printed it?" This is worth thinking through carefully before you pay for a subscription to avoid a hypothetical problem.
In practice, if you point your QR code to a URL you control — your own website, a Google Drive file, a page you manage — you can update what is behind that URL without changing the code. If your menu lives at yourrestaurant.com/menu, you can update the menu page as often as you like without generating a new code. The QR code points to the URL, not to a specific version of the page.
The only scenario where a static code genuinely becomes a problem is if the URL itself changes — a different domain, a different file path, a different platform. Plan ahead and that scenario is largely avoidable.
A note on tracking and privacy
When someone scans a dynamic QR code, their phone sends a request to the redirect platform's server before ever reaching the destination. That platform can log the scan, the device type, the approximate location and the time. This is not inherently malicious — it is how analytics work — but it is worth being aware of. Some users are sceptical of QR codes that route through unknown short URLs, particularly in a business context where phishing via QR code is a known threat.
Static QR codes do not involve any intermediate server. The phone reads the data directly from the image and acts on it. There is nothing to intercept, log or track.
The short answer
For most people reading this: use a static QR code. Make sure the URL you point it to is one you own or control long-term. Download the image and store it somewhere safe. It will still work in ten years with zero ongoing cost.
If you are running a large print campaign, managing a complex marketing funnel with multiple touchpoints or need granular scan analytics — then a dynamic code and the subscription that comes with it may be worth it. Otherwise, you are solving a problem you probably do not have.
