A WiFi QR code lets a phone connect to your network automatically when the camera is pointed at it — no typing, no reading out a 16-character password, no misheard letters. Once you have made one, you can put it on a card, frame it, or print it on a sticker for your router. This guide explains how they work, how to make one and what to watch out for.

How a WiFi QR code works

A WiFi QR code encodes a short text string that follows a standard format: the network name (SSID), the password and the security type. When a phone camera reads the code, the operating system recognises the format and presents a prompt asking if the user wants to join that network. On iOS 11 and later and Android 10 and later, this happens natively through the camera app — no third-party app required.

Step-by-step: creating your WiFi QR code

  4. Select the security type (WPA for most home and office networks)
  5. If your network name is hidden, tick the "Hidden network" option

This is worth flagging upfront: putting the QR code on something that is hard to update (like a wall tile or a permanent sign) can create problems later. Laminated cards or framed prints are better because they are easy to replace.

What if the password has special characters?
