What is a QR code?

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information as a pattern of black and white squares. Any smartphone camera can read one instantly — no app required — and take the user to a website, connect them to a WiFi network, save a contact or perform any other action encoded in the code.

QR codes were originally developed in 1994 to track automotive parts. They became widely used in consumer applications after smartphones with built-in camera readers became mainstream, and usage accelerated sharply during the 2020s as a touchless alternative to printed menus, tickets and forms.

The pattern includes built-in error correction, which means a QR code continues to scan reliably even if part of it is damaged, dirty or obscured — including by a logo overlay. The amount of redundancy is controlled by the error correction level you choose when generating the code.

What does an email QR code do?

An email QR code opens the phone's mail app with a pre-filled email — the recipient address, subject line and message body are already filled in. The user just taps Send. It is useful on business cards, posters and customer service materials.

Do I need to fill in the subject and body?

No. Only the email address is required. The subject and body fields are optional — leave them blank to create a QR code that simply opens a new email to that address with nothing pre-filled.

Which email apps support email QR codes?

Any mail app that handles mailto: links will work — Gmail, Apple Mail, Outlook and most default Android mail apps all support this. The QR code uses the standard mailto: URI format.

Can I use an email QR code for a contact form or newsletter sign-up?

Yes. Pre-fill the subject with something like "Newsletter sign-up" and the body with any information you want the sender to include. When they scan the code, the email is ready to send with one tap.

Do email QR codes expire?

No. The mailto: link is encoded directly into the image and works forever, as long as the email address it points to remains valid.

Is there a character limit for the subject or body?

There is no hard limit imposed by this tool, but keep in mind that more text means a denser QR code pattern, which can be harder to scan if printed small. For best results, keep the pre-filled body short — a sentence or two at most.
