What is a QR code?

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information as a pattern of black and white squares. Any smartphone camera can read one instantly — no app required — and take the user to a website, connect them to a WiFi network, save a contact or perform any other action encoded in the code.

QR codes were originally developed in 1994 to track automotive parts. They became widely used in consumer applications after smartphones with built-in camera readers became mainstream, and usage accelerated sharply during the 2020s as a touchless alternative to printed menus, tickets and forms.

The pattern includes built-in error correction, which means a QR code continues to scan reliably even if part of it is damaged, dirty or obscured — including by a logo overlay. The amount of redundancy is controlled by the error correction level you choose when generating the code.

What can I encode in a plain text QR code?

Anything — a note, a short message, a serial number, a product code, a coupon code, a password hint or any other string of characters. When scanned, the phone displays the text directly rather than navigating to a URL or performing an action.

How is a plain text QR code different from a URL QR code?

A URL QR code encodes a web address and most phones will open it in a browser automatically. A plain text QR code encodes a raw string — the phone displays it as text rather than treating it as a link. Use plain text for content that is not a URL.

Is there a character limit for plain text QR codes?

In theory QR codes can hold up to about 4,000 characters of text, but longer content produces a much denser pattern that can be harder to scan, especially on small prints. For best results, keep text under a few hundred characters.

Can I use a plain text QR code for product labelling or inventory?

Yes. Encoding a serial number, batch code or product ID as plain text is a common industrial use. For this use case, choose Low (L) error correction to keep the pattern as simple as possible, since these codes are typically scanned in controlled conditions.
